Deliver responsible supply chains

What It Means

At Goodman Fielder, we are working to ensure our business is fit for the future and we know our success is reliant upon thriving, productive supply chains. We strive to identify and minimise the potential for negative impacts on communities and the environment from sourcing our ingredients. Today, our focus is to expand our sustainable sourcing program to provide greater transparency of ethical sourcing. For us, it means having the foundations in place to enable positive impact through our operations, and those of our partners. This will aim to eliminate exploitive or harmful practices to our environment and societies from our supply chain.

Our goal is to have 100% sustainably sourced ingredients by 2030. We know this requires the fundamentals of ethical sourcing to be well managed and we have a target for our facilities to be best practice in this regard, providing an example to our suppliers.

What We’ve Achieved

Most recently, we achieved the leading score for an Australian Based company on the 2020 WWF Palm Oil Buyers Scorecard- highlighting our efforts to source certified sustainable palm oil. We have commenced implementation of the SEDEX ethical sourcing platform to improve visibility and management of social risks, environmental performance and working conditions. As a foundation member of the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI) Platform's Australian Chapter we have been collaborating along the supply chain to build knowledge and implementation of positive practices.

We are a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil and support the production of sustainable palm oil.  In 2014, Goodman Fielder committed to sourcing certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO) for all Goodman Fielder products in Australia and New Zealand using the mass balance supply chain model.  We have delivered on this commitment including achieving supply chain certification for all manufacturing sites that handle ingredients containing palm oil.

This commitment is supported by the adoption of Wilmar’s No Deforestation, No Peat and No Exploitation Policy which applies to all Goodman Fielder operations.  Goodman Fielder tracks the progress of major palm oil suppliers against this (or their equivalent) policy.  More information on this policy and how it is being implemented across the broader Wilmar business can be found here.

What’s Next

To achieve our ambitious goal, we need to ensure it is built on solid foundations and we are committed to scaling up our ethical sourcing and transparency programs to increase the proportion of our supply chain verified as compliant with our ethical code of conduct. We will also continue our work with the SAI Platform and other stakeholders to define and deliver sustainable sourcing solutions for our priority commodities and ingredients.

Animal Welfare

Goodman Fielder takes animal welfare seriously and supports the Dairy Industry and MPI in monitoring and enforcing Codes of Practice around the ethical treatment of all animals.

While Goodman Fielder is not involved in the collection of milk from Dairy Farms directly, we require our suppliers to have appropriate programs in place. Our supplier management program conducts regular reviews of supplier compliance to these requirements and provides confidence in the integrity of our milk supply.

Cage Free Egg Commitment

Goodman Fielder is committed to using cage free eggs for products we manufacture in Australia and New Zealand. A working group was established in 2016 to drive the execution of this transition. Our Praise whole egg mayonnaise and aioli products have been using fresh Australian free range eggs since 2017.  As at early 2019 we completed the transition of all Praise products (both retail and food service) in Australia and New Zealand to free range eggs.

Work is ongoing for the last remaining products (representing about 1% of the eggs used in our Australian factories).

Goodman Fielder continues to work closely with our suppliers to complete and maintain our transition plan.
