What it Means
At Goodman Fielder we believe that making food better includes producing ingredients in the most sustainable way. We have a role to play in supporting farmers, our stewards of the land, to build on their existing efforts to scale more regenerative agricultural practices. This means proactively creating a long term approach to work with the land, to enhance soil health, preserve micro-organisms and avoid the use of chemicals and practices that disrupt the delicate balance of these vital, food-giving systems.
What We’ve Achieved
As a foundation partner of the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative’s (SAI) Australian Chapter we have helped build knowledge and capability in this area. Recent activities of the platform include an industry field trip to Mulloon Creek, to see first hand their innovative, regenerative land management practises. We have also undertaken master classes on soil health, the use of digital tools in precision agriculture, the link between nutrition and sustainability.
What’s Next
We are working with stakeholders to identify which regenerative agriculture practises will have the greatest positive impact in our supply chain. This informs the role we can play in supporting farmers to transition from current practises, to those that are designed for the future. Regenerative agriculture forms part of our broader sustainable sourcing program and is about identifying how we can achieve outcomes like commodity yields, regenerative crop rotations while maintaining the livelihoods for our farmers.
