What is Merchandising at Goodman Fielder?

Merchandising is all about making sure our products are easy to find, well-stocked, and looking great on supermarket shelves. As a Field Merchandiser, you’ll play a key role in representing some of New Zealand’s most loved household brands — from fresh bread to milk, cheese, and yoghurt. It’s a hands-on, active role where you’ll work independently, visiting multiple stores each day, lifting and placing products, and ensuring our displays meet the highest standards. You’ll also build strong relationships with supermarket staff, becoming a trusted and familiar face in-store. No two days are the same, and the role offers a mix of routine and variety - perfect for someone who enjoys physical work and takes pride in doing a great job.

This role is a great fit for someone who:

  • Enjoys staying active and working independently
  • Is organised and takes pride in presentation
  • Has a friendly attitude and enjoys building relationships in-store
  • If that sounds like you, merchandising could be the perfect way to get started with Goodman Fielder.

Why start your FMCG journey here?

A Day in the Life of a Merchandiser

Stories from current and former Merchandisers

Cassie

After graduating from university, I wanted an entry role in FMCG to launch my sales and marketing career. With a passion for food and a background in hospitality, merchandising at Goodman Fielder - and working with iconic Kiwi brands - was a natural choice.

Highlights:
• Every day was different
• Direct impact on customer experience
• Flexibility and autonomy is great!

Skills developed:
• Understanding customer behaviour and FMCG trends
• Organization and problem-solving
• Building strong relationships across stores

Merchandising taught me to spot opportunities, stay organized, and connect with people - all of which prepared me for my current role as a Retail Territory Manager.

If you’re observant, determined, and ready to make an impact, merchandising is a great way to start your FMCG career and help deliver quality food to Kiwi families.

Cassie, Retail Territory Manager

Royston

I started back in 2008, working at Glen Innes Pak’nSave as a bread merchandiser. This role attracted me because of the daytime hours and the chance to work with people. I already knew a bit about Goodman Fielder and had met some ex-employees who gave positive feedback about their career growth.

As a merchandiser working in Glen Innes for 15 years, I’ve won ‘Best Merchandiser’ five times at the year-end party. I also completed the NZ Level 2 National Merchandising course, sponsored by Goodman Fielder.

Learnings & growth:
• Health and safety
• People practices
• Stock control
• Time management
• Communication
• Understanding and supporting company business plans

These skills gave me confidence and great experience, helping me move into a supervisor and MTL role.

Advice for future merchandisers: Be patient, practice your skills, and take responsibility. Show your ‘can-do’ attitude and maintain a positive mindset.

Jo

After being made redundant in hospitality, I joined Goodman Fielder as a Christmas casual. I was looking for income, but a friend working at GF spoke highly of the company, its culture, and the work environment.

Highlights:
• Merchandising felt like being part of a big family, even when working solo
• Supportive team, flexibility, and the chance to learn about Sales
• The satisfaction of hitting targets and helping the Sales team
• Watching people grow and progress through the company

Skills developed:
• Health and Safety knowledge
• Communication and relationship-building
• Injury prevention and leadership

Starting in merchandising gave me a strong foundation for career growth. As I progressed from casual worker to Supervisor, I learned the importance of knowing the role inside and out to support my team. Leading by example and setting clear expectations were key to moving into my current role as Retail Field Manager.

Merchandising not only taught me practical skills but also gave me the confidence to step into leadership. It helped me grow from understanding the operations to leading a team and shaping our success.

Success in merchandising requires a strong work ethic, good communication, and a willingness to contribute to the bigger picture.

I joined looking for security, but after 16 years, I’m still here - thanks to the opportunities and the culture at GF.

I was desperate for a change in a new job from 20 years in food, kitchen, and catering. I had no idea what this position entailed, which is why I applied for the job. I had also just moved out to West Auckland and wanted something local. After 7 years, I am still really enjoying merchandising.

The best part? Not only being in a great supportive team but also meeting some amazing people in the 'public eyes' - having your regular customers is special!!

Goodman Fielder is very supportive, always trying to improve our connection as a company and always there when you need them.

The skills I have learnt during my time with Goodman Fielder are how to better myself under pressure and manage my time.

My advice is to be independent, fast-thinking, and have patience. Ask for help if you need because Goodman Fielder is all about team effort.
