When heritage bakers, MacKenzie High Country Bread, decided to expand into the much-cherished pie category, the team knew they would need to bring some seriously good pies to the table to grab the attention of a nation of pie connoisseurs.
MacKenzie pies launches this month with a full suite of classic pies with the brand’s signature hearty texture baked into every crust. All of the pies are created to rise above your standard pie-warmer fare, but the pièce de résistance is the MacKenzie breakfast pie – it’s got bacon, it’s got egg, but more importantly, it has hash brown baked inside the pie.
The achievement of placing hash brown in a pie is a first for a nationwide baker and draws inspiration from home-baking experts who’ve been posting their genius on social channels for some time.
Nina Turnbull, who headed up developing the new range of MacKenzie Pies, says Kiwis expect quality from MacKenzie, and entering the pie category was an endeavour the team took extremely seriously.
“After two-years of finessing, our “nicely done” pie range is finally ready for its public debut – whether you’re looking for a unique take on your classic steak and cheese or you’re on the hunt for a hearty vegetarian alternative, this range has something for all pie lovers,” says Nina.
“We are especially excited for Kiwis to try out our breakthrough act – the brekky pie; free range eggs, bacon, a homestyle chutney and of course the crowd favourite; the humble yet iconic hash brown – is there really anything better than a hash brown wrapped in golden pastry with added South Island stoneground flour?” she continues.
To bring the breakfast pie to market, the MacKenzie team went back to basics with a handmade technique for adding each hash brown.
Kiwi pie connoisseurs looking to sample the new range can find MacKenzie pies in the warmer at all good dairies, and on-shelf at their local supermarket.
