Puhoi Valley Kawau Blue was crowned the best cheese in the country at the New Zealand Cheese Awards on 1 March, awarded the prestigious Countdown Champion of Champions Cheese Award.
Passion for handcrafted cheeses, teamwork and innovation are the main drivers for the cheese makers behind Puhoi Valley Cheese Company, which was awarded an incredible 11 gold medals, 16 silver, and five bronze medals across its outstanding range of cheeses.

The company was the most awarded cheese company at the awards, picking up the following category awards:

  • Renco New Zealand Champion Export Cheese Award for Puhoi Valley Fresh Goat Cheese
  • Ecolab Champion Blue Cheese Award for Puhoi Valley Kawau Blue
  • Thermaflo Champion Washed Rind Cheese Award for Puhoi Valley Cellar Range Washed Rind

It’s a record breaking haul for the cheese makers behind the Puhoi Valley range, which includes Puhoi Valley Cellar Ranges cheeses – the latter sold exclusively on location at the Puhoi Valley Cafe and supplied to New Zealand’s top restaurants.
“I’m extremely proud of our cheese-making team,” says Head Cheese Maker Franck Beaurain. “It’s an excellent team, we have access to good milk and we have great recipes.”
“But it’s also about passion. We check our cheeses at least once or twice a day and act accordingly to fine tune all the elements which make for a great cheese. Consistency is also so important,” says Franck.
Originally from Normandy in France, Franck has 30 years’ experience in making specialty cheeses.
“To make a cheese in optimal condition you have to think about what you are doing every day, every week and every month of the year,” he says.
Puhoi Valley Cheeses are available at leading supermarkets nationwide, as well as selected restaurants and cafes.
