The Dream Big Graduate Programme – what will Goodman Fielder offer you?

Goodman Fielder’s purpose is simple – to create food that people love. Operating in the FMCG industry means no two days are the same. The pace is fast, the work is diverse and our various business functions need to work closely together to ensure our fantastic consumer products are on the shelf every day and top of mind for New Zealanders.

The Goodman Fielder Dream Big Graduate Programme runs for two years and its structure reflects this need to connect different functions along the product lifecycle. The programme provides graduates with four six month rotations within various areas of our business – the first in your interest area/area of study, then in three other business functions which are relevant to that area and key to understanding success at Goodman Fielder.

You will be supported every step of the way as you explore and learn different areas of our business. You will gain valuable on the job training across a variety of very different functions, which will give you true insight in to how a large FMCG manufacturing company like Goodman Fielder works. You could be leading a team at one of our manufacturing plants one day, then building relationships with key customers the next.

We are ‘Dreaming Big’ and looking for talented, passionate graduates to become our leaders of tomorrow! In return we can offer a dedicated programme with a permanent position to set you up to succeed for your future career.

Rotations so far: Grocery Sales, Marketing
Degree/Masters: Bachelor of Commerce, Marketing and Management
University studied at: Victoria University of Wellington

What interested you in applying for the Goodman Fielder Dream Big Graduate Programme?

I’ve always been one of the really weird people who loves supermarkets. I’m fascinated by new brands, new products and promotions that vie for shoppers’ attention and attempt to influence decision making in a crowded marketplace. I applied for Goodman Fielder’s Graduate Programme because I wanted the opportunity to turn what I loved into a career – and what better place to do that than the home of some of New Zealand’s most loved brands?

What have you enjoyed most about the Dream Big Graduate Programme in your first year?

I’m the type of person who gets a bit unmotivated if I feel like what I’m doing isn’t making a difference. So, personally I’m really happy with the level of responsibility I’ve been given from so early on. In my first rotation, I was responsible for driving and monitoring the sales of some of our brands in Countdown supermarkets. Now, in Marketing I’m responsible for introducing new products and establishing activation plans. I’m constantly being pushed out of my comfort zone – it’s great!

What has been your biggest achievement in the programme so far?

Our Ernest Adams brand has a fabulous range of sweet-bake seasonal products, and for many years the business has wanted to leverage this by running a Mid-Winter Christmas promotion. In my first rotation at GF, I was able to successfully engage numerous internal and external stakeholders to get it off the ground. The satisfaction of seeing my promotion in the Countdown mailer and in Countdown stores was huge!

Has the Dream Big Programme lived up to your expectations?

It’s definitely surpassed them. I feel like I’ve been given the opportunity to make a real difference.

What is your favourite Goodman Fielder product and why?

Puhoi Valley Soft White Triple Cream Brie. For me, it’s really strongly associated to family celebrations and lots of good times!

What Goodman Fielder Value do you like most and why?

I like We dream big. And we make it happen. It emphasises the importance of pushing yourself by setting really ambitious goals, but also that it’s equally important to find a way to execute them. A dream without a plan of attack will remain just that – a dream.

Final words to someone applying for the Dream Big Programme…

The assessment day in particular is very demanding. Make sure you don’t leave it with any regrets. If you’re someone who is naturally shy, make an effort to push yourself out of your comfort zone and create a name for yourself.

kate-mitchell

Kate Mitchell – Sales Graduate

Rotations so far: Route Foodservice Sales, Grocery Sales
Degree/Masters: Bachelor of Arts (Psychology)/Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing)
University studied at: University of Canterbury

What interested you in applying for the Goodman Fielder Dream Big Graduate Programme?

When I was nearing the end of my studies I realised I didn’t want to lock myself down to one pathway when really there were so many real world jobs I still didn’t have a great understanding of. The rotation aspect of the Dream Big programme appealed hugely as I knew I’d be presented the opportunity to experience a diverse range of roles by opting to work at such a large company.

What have you enjoyed most about the Dream Big Graduate Programme in your first year?

Our monthly graduate seminars stand out as being one of the most enjoyable aspects of the Dream Big Programme. They are always extremely informative and I enjoy that they have increased my understanding of how business units link beyond my rotations as well as ensuring on-going personal development.

What has been your biggest achievement in the programme so far?

One of the most satisfying moments has been seeing the GF stand at the New Zealand Fine Food Show looking great and hosting thousands of visitors. With several months of build-up and coordinating all of the elements for the Show as project manager, it was a fantastic experience to get a tangible reward for my work in seeing it all come together.

Has the Dream Big Programme lived up to your expectations?

Absolutely! I have been given responsibility for tasks with real consequences, continually offered learning experiences and been integrated into the company which has provided many opportunities outside of simply sitting at a desk. I certainly feel as though I’m gaining a broad understanding of the company; whether this has been on delivery trucks, working in the customer service call centre or managing an account for Progressives.

What is your favourite Goodman Fielder product and why?

Vogel’s bread – can’t beat it! And an even better perk, it is available everyday in the staffrooms.

What Goodman Fielder Value do you like most and why?

We are ‘we’, not ‘me’. I find that this value in particular is genuinely lived on a day-to-day basis and as a graduate I have come to really appreciate this. It means there is always someone to ask a question of or to explain a complicated task. The strong team ethos has also allowed me to get involved in other projects beyond those of my direct team, as people are extremely prepared to offer graduates learning opportunities and the chance to experience one-off events.

Final words to someone applying for the Dream Big Programme…

To succeed and truly maximise the opportunities offered through the Dream Big Graduate Programme, you need to be prepared to be learning something new every single day, as well as trying your hand across business functions that you may not have experienced whilst at university. Beyond the grad programme, GF is a fantastic place to work in terms of the people and culture and there is a real sense of passion for our brands – I’ve no doubt that this is a fantastic place to enter to the working world.

rachel-wakefield

Rachel Wakefield – Marketing Graduate

What interested you in applying for the Goodman Fielder Dream Big Graduate Programme?

A company that is all about food…who wouldn’t want to be involved?! The six key values here really stood out to me; there are many Graduate roles out there, but Goodman Fielder came across as a company that values its culture as highly as its performance.

What have you enjoyed most about the Dream Big Graduate Programme in your first year?

The great people I get to work with every day. I have had the chance to meet and work with so many awesome people over my time here so far. Also the scope of opportunities that is available to get involved in here at Goodman Fielder, from visiting our many plants throughout the country, helping with major marketing initiatives, as well as working with our charity in providing nutritious food for schools.

What has been your biggest achievement in the programme so far?

I have been involved in the artwork redesign for our growing UHT milk export to China, which involved making our packaging Chinese-English dual language. This is definitely my most exciting achievement having seen the finished product ready to be exported to China, and it is the most awesome feeling knowing that you had a hand in creating a product that is hitting shelves in NZs biggest export market.

Has the Dream Big Programme lived up to your expectations?

Working here has definitely lived up to and exceeded my expectations. My ideas and suggestions have come to life in artwork and packaging changes which I have been involved in this year. I am blown away that I am already leaving my mark within the company, and have had the responsibility to contribute to something real right from the start.

What is your favourite Goodman Fielder product and why?

My favourite would be the Edmonds Café Style Chocolate Chip Cookies cake mix box. Though it’s an instant cake mix, it makes perfect delicious cookies every time and it still gives me that homemade feeling!

What Goodman Fielder Value do you like most and why?

I love the value We get better – all the time as there are always new opportunities and projects to be involved in to improve yourself and the way we work. There are many people here who inspire me with their passion and work ethic, and I am really learning the value of getting better all the time.

Final words to someone applying for the Dream Big Programme…

‘Dream Big’ is definitely the way to describe the programme, you will have the chance to learn so many new skills and work with some awesome people, so come Dream Big with us!

avichavda

Avi Chavda – Operations Graduate

Rotations so far: Operations, Research & Development
Degree/Masters: Bachelor of Engineering (Hons)
University studied at: University of Waikato

What interested you in applying for the Goodman Fielder Dream Big Graduate Programme?

I wanted to be a part of a graduate programme that would give me experience in various functions of a fast paced FMCG company, not only technical but the business side as well. The opportunity to step out of my comfort zone, make a difference and have a say about what I wanted to get out of each rotation was really attractive.

What have you enjoyed most about the Dream Big Graduate Programme in your first year?

The people and the company culture. So far I have worked at both a manufacturing site and at head office and the people around me have always been fun to work with. I have been given great opportunities by supportive managers who have guided me along the way. It’s also great that, as graduates in the programme, we get the chance to frequently have chats and discuss ideas with leaders, site managers and even directors of the company.

What has been your biggest achievement in the programme so far?

During my operations rotation at Irvines I was given the opportunity to manage a production line with 10 operators which made over 12 different products. Coming straight out of university I was placed in a leadership role and, with the supportive team at Irvines, we were able to make some changes and increase the safety, quality and efficiency of our production line.

Has the Dream Big Programme lived up to your expectations?

The programme has provided me with a wide range of great opportunities and allowed me to push myself and develop new skills. The chance for a graduate to actually make a difference and create change in the way we do things at Goodman Fielder, whether it be how a production line runs or testing in a lab, has exceeded my expectation from what I imagined.

What is your favourite Goodman Fielder product and why?

Puhoi Valley yoghurt – Lemon Delicious The whole range of Puhoi Valley yoghurts are amazing – I don’t think there’s anything better on the shelf.

What Goodman Fielder Value do you like most and why?

We love food, especially our food. Food is one of the most enjoyable things of our life and it’s with us at all occasions with family and friends. Being part of a company that makes so much delicious food that New Zealanders enjoy every day is very special.

Final words to someone applying for the Dream Big Programme…

If you want to be part of a supportive company culture, be presented with awesome opportunities to grow in a wide range of areas, and have fun (and yummy food) along the way, Goodman fielder is a great place to work.

Julia_Wild

Julia Wild – Supply Chain Graduate

Rotations so far: Supply Chain, RFS Sales
Degree/Masters: Bachelor of Chemical and Process Engineering (Hons.), Master of Engineering Management
University studied at: University of Canterbury

What interested you in applying for the Goodman Fielder Dream Big Graduate Programme?

I was really intrigued with the opportunity to try out such a wide range of areas within the company outside of my area of study. It was exciting to have the opportunity to learn more about non-technical areas of business, and to marry up new skills in these areas with my existing technical expertise.

What have you enjoyed most about the Dream Big Graduate Programme in your first year?

I really love working in food. It’s so rewarding to see the products you work with on a daily basis on the supermarket shelves and in your friend’s and family’s fridges, and know that you played a role in getting them there.

What has been your biggest achievement in the programme so far?

For me, that would be organising the Goodman Fielder Great Northern Race Day in the first month of my new rotation. I was thrown in it on day one with a short time frame and very little experience organising corporate events, and it was such a great feeling seeing it all come together, and being able to own the event.

Has the Dream Big Programme lived up to your expectations?

One thing that has really exceeded my expectations has been the culture at Goodman Fielder. It is so true that the people make a workplace. Social functions such as netball tournaments and BBQs allow you to get to know people from outside of your team in a relaxed social setting, which in turn creates a really positive environment to come to work in every day.

What is your favourite Goodman Fielder product and why?

I love the Puhoi yoghurts! They are so delicious and totally encompass what I think a premium yoghurt should be. A perfect dessert treat.

tom-freeman

Tom Freeman – Research & Development Graduate

Rotations so far: Research & Development, Operations – Continuous Improvement
Degree/Masters: Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Food Science
University studied at: University of Auckland

What interested you in applying for the Goodman Fielder Dream Big Graduate Programme?

It would have to be the versatility of the roles that we could be a part of with the programme. Being a technical person I also wanted to see how the other side of the business works and this gives the perfect environment to learn and contribute in those roles.

What have you enjoyed most about the Dream Big Graduate Programme in your first year?

The people here at Goodman Fielder. Everyone is really friendly and willing to help you in your role if you just ask.

What has been your biggest achievement in the programme so far?

It would definitely be having my own project to develop a new product from scratch.
Has the Dream Big Programme lived up to your expectations?
Definitely, it is by far the most challenging thing that I have ever done but as a result it has been the most rewarding.

What is your favourite Goodman Fielder product and why?

Puhoi Valley Luscious Nectarine yoghurt. Delicious, indulgent and reminds me of summer.

What Goodman Fielder Value do you like most and why?

We love food, especially our food. When you are developing products it is so much easier if you are passionate about them. All of our brands are so recognised throughout New Zealand that it’s easy to get excited and really get behind them.

Final words to someone applying for the Dream Big Programme…

Do it. Be a part of a great company and really test yourself with all that Goodman Fielder has to offer.

What Goodman Fielder Value do you like most and why?

I really like We are ‘we’, not ‘me’. Everyone across all functions really does work together and interact on a daily basis to work towards a common goal, creating such a positive environment, particularly for new graduates trying to understand new systems and processes.

Final words to someone applying for the Dream Big Programme…

You are not limited by the specifics that you studied, so be open to learning as much and as broadly as possible. The Dream Big Graduate Program is such a unique opportunity to gain a rounded understanding of how a business functions, don’t hesitate to get involved!
